Camp Mystic Flood Hearing: Day 2

State lawmakers return to Austin today for another day of emotional hearings, following the deadly floods in the Texas Hill country last year. On Monday, a state investigator gave a detailed timeline of events leading up to the deadly floods on the weekend of July 4, 2025, at Camp Mystic. In the end, attorney Casey Garrett determined that the deaths of 25 campers, two counselors, and Mystic's co-owner were preventable. Garrett highlighted multiple failures in the camp's emergency planning, training, and communication. Families of the girls who were killed did not want to speak to the media; they were seen hugging outside the hearings. Today, the committee will hear from a father who did his own search for his daughter and eventually found her body. Despite multiple lawsuits and direct calls for action from lawmakers, the camp is still planning to host hundreds of girls this summer at another location a mile up the river.
