Before Japanese denim became globally respected, there was a rare collaboration between Bobson and KENZO JEANS. This video is part of the “Bobson Archive Series,” a project dedicated to preserving the products, history, and firsthand memories behind Japanese denim culture. In this episode, we look back at “KENZO JEANS.” During the 1980s, Bobson worked as a licensee for KENZO JEANS, creating a range of products that brought together Japanese manufacturing and French fashion design. In the video, we introduce archival KENZO JEANS pieces featuring Japanese motifs such as Hokusai’s “Great Wave” and Mount Fuji, while exploring how Japanese craftsmanship and European aesthetics came together through denim. Together with a former team member who was directly involved in the project, we discuss the stories behind the products, the challenges of balancing design and manufacturing, the differences in creative values, and memories of working with Kenzo Takada himself. This is not simply a product introduction. It is a record of a time when a Japanese denim manufacturer worked closely with a global fashion brand to create something that crossed cultures.
