How General Franco's Legacy Lives on in Modern Spain | Beyond Borders

Five decades since the end of General Francisco Franco’s Fascist Spain, the former dictator’s legacy still looms large over much of Spanish society, ironically partly due to the so-called Pact of Forgetting. Under pressure from the left, the current PSOE government passed the Democratic Memory Law which addresses this dark period by ensuring the government takes a central role in bringing justice to victims and their families, excavating mass graves of those his forces killed, properly educating Spain’s youth on the nature of Franco’s rule and stripping all symbols that glorify him. But right-wing and far-right organisations have railed against this controversial law and still support Franco.
