Created on November 30, 1939, PARNASO is the third oldest park in the country, representing an important milestone in the history of Brazilian Conservation Units. (Learn more about the park's history) It is one of the best places in the country for mountain sports such as climbing, hiking, rappelling and others; in addition to having fantastic waterfalls. The Park has the largest network of trails in Brazil. There are over 200 kilometers of trails of all difficulty levels: from the suspended trail, accessible even to wheelchair users, to the challenging Petrópolis-Teresópolis Crossing, with 30 km of ascents and descents through the high mountains. Among the climbs, the Dedo de Deus (God's Finger) stands out, considered the starting point of climbing in the country. It was created in 1939 to protect the exceptional landscape and biodiversity of this stretch of the Serra do Mar mountain range in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro. 20,024 hectares are protected in the municipalities of Teresópolis, Petrópolis, Magé, and Guapimirim. The park is home to more than 2,800 plant species cataloged by science, 462 bird species, 105 mammal species, 103 amphibian species, and 83 reptile species, including 130 endangered animals and many endemic species (that only occur in this location).
