In 1991, the project became known as STAR GATE. Over the course of 23 years, $20 million was spent on the program. Participants were given only coordinates and asked to mentally visualize facilities located on the other side of the world. Among the project's most ambitious claimed successes were observing the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan, locating a crashed Soviet aircraft in Africa, and describing the design of a new Typhoon-class submarine under construction at the Severodvinsk shipyard. CIA records suggested that these "Controlled Remote Viewing" training programs, conducted inside specially insulated Faraday cages, were skills that anyone could potentially develop. However, with the end of the Cold War, the political shield protecting the project disappeared. In 1995, independent evaluations commissioned by the CIA revealed serious disagreements among scientists over whether the results were due to chance or represented a genuine phenomenon. The primary reason for the project's cancellation was that, in real-world operations outside the laboratory, the information provided by participants was often abstract, vague, and incorrect approximately 85 percent of the time. Unable to produce any actionable intelligence, the Stargate Project was reportedly shelved in 1995. Following the release of CIA documents in 2017, it entered history as one of the Cold War's most mysterious and controversial espionage experiments.
