American Opera: The Legacy They Want You to Forget We are constantly told that opera in America is dying because it never really belonged here. That is the fashionable but lazy narrative; it is the narrative of cultural defeat. According to this view, opera was always a European import — something America borrowed, admired, subsidized, and eventually abandoned because it never truly took root on American soil. There is only one problem with that story: It is false. The compositional record proves otherwise. In honor of America’s 250th anniversary, *Vocal Reckoning* begins a special four-episode series on the legacy of *American opera* — not American singers, not vocal technique, not the collapse of standards in singing, but the works themselves: the scores, the composers, the musical dramas, and the astonishing body of operatic literature this country actually produced. For the next four episodes, we will look at the American operatic canon as evidence — evidence that this nation did not merely import opera, imitate Europe, or decorate itself with borrowed prestige. America created operas of its own: bold, strange, beautiful, ambitious, flawed, original, and unmistakably rooted in the American experience. These works drew from European inheritance, but they also absorbed the sound of this country: spirituals, hymns, jazz, folk song, Broadway, modernism, vernacular speech, frontier mythology, urban violence, religious longing, racial conflict, moral contradiction, political turmoil, and the restless, impossible energy of the American experiment. If American opera is now in crisis, it is not because America failed to produce a serious operatic tradition. It is because that tradition has been neglected, mismanaged, ideologized, trivialized, and in many cases deliberately forgotten by the very institutions that were supposed to protect it. The problem was never that America lacked great operas; the problem is that America’s cultural class lost the confidence to defend its own civilization.
