And so Anting German Town was born — the “Fake German Town.” ⸻ 🏘️ A City Built in the German Spirit, but Soulless In the early 2000s, Shanghai authorities, in cooperation with Germany, built this town. The aim was to bring European culture to China through modern architecture and to create a model “European village” in urban planning. Its architecture was inspired by small Bavarian towns in Germany: red-tiled roofs, pastel-colored houses, small squares, and even a fake “German Square.” The streets were laid out according to German urban planning, and even the signs were written in German. ⸻ 🏗️ Opened in 2003, but Left Empty In 2003, “Shanghai Anting German Town” opened with high hopes. But there was a problem: Nobody wanted to live there. Transport was weak, prices were high, and there were no jobs nearby. The result: The beautiful town quickly turned into a ghost town. Most houses were never occupied, restaurants opened and closed again. Even today, many windows remain dusty, and the walls faded. ⸻ 🇩🇪 German Architects, Chinese Workers The project was designed by German architects. But its construction was carried out by Chinese engineers and workers. The result: A place that looks entirely German but carries the soul of China. Today, the area has become somewhat livelier. A new generation of Chinese photographers, influencers, and tourists come here seeking nostalgic European vibes. Some buildings have been converted into cafés or boutique hotels. But there is still a sense of “artificiality” in the streets — as if you’re on a movie set.
