The role of food and diet on migraine webinar Margaret Slavin
In this video, we cover: What do we know about food triggers for migraine, and what do we not know? What has recent research revealed about how overall eating patterns (including omega-3 to omega-6 fat ratios, ketogenic diets, low glycemic, and others) influence migraine outcomes over time? What should people with migraine know about skipping meals and fasting? Should we take supplements? How long do we need to follow a diet to see whether it helps with migraine? Margaret Slavin, PhD, RDN is a food scientist and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist whose research broadly investigates the impact of food on human health. Early in her career, she specialized in the laboratory techniques that measure nutrients in foods, ranging from the predominant carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, the vitamins and minerals, and down to components found in tiny amounts like the phytochemicals. More recently, her work has grown away from the benchtop to incorporate her clinical nutrition training in conducting human subjects research, including assessing dietary intake in relation to diseases or environment. One of Dr. Slavin’s major research interests is to explore the relationship between the diet and migraine disease, including both the short-term and long-term impacts of food on disease outcomes. She has utilized techniques ranging from bench science, to population-level data analyses, and clinical assessments. The long-term goal of her research is to build evidence for dietary recommendations for mitigating migraine symptoms and progression.
