THE COMET THAT CRIED FOR ITS MOTHER by Somtow Sucharitkul
Millenia hence, the vast array of worlds known as the Dispersal of Man is overseen by the Inquest, a semi-religious elite motivated supposedly by compassion to prevent stagnation of the species by destroying "utopias" and forcibly reminding mankind of its fallen state, Whole planets are destroyed and populations displaced in the course of vast games of Makrugh which no one, not even the Inquestors, fully understands. It is a universe of equally extreme beauty and cruelty. Set in the Inquestor universe, involving multiple short stories and novels. This story, from the Thai-American author who is also a composer, conductor, and artistic director of the Bangkok Opera and Siam Philharmonic Orchestra, was originally published in the September 1984 issue of Amazing Stories magazine. Re-published in a French omni in 2005, a fanzine collection of tales from the same universe called Inquestor Tales #3 in 2019, and in a collection of the author's stories called Utopia Hunters in 1984. Read by Darrell T. Smith II for my channel Quasar Spectra. Support me with a contribution: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?busine... Buy Utopia Hunters: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=utopia+hun...
