Established in 1902, Crater Lake is the fifth-oldest National Park in the United States and the only one in Oregon. The park centers on the caldera of Crater Lake, a remnant of the destroyed volcano Mount Mazama. The eruption of Mt. Mazama formed a large caldera that was filled in about 740 years, forming this beautiful lake with a deep blue hue. The lake is 1,949 feet deep at its deepest point, and depending on how you measure it's either the ninth deepest or third deepest in the world. We're boondocking for the week of the July 4th holiday right up the road from Crater Lake at Diamond Lake Recreation Area, from which we'll explore both lakes, the upper Rogue River, Rogue River Gorge, and the town of Prospect.
