Demon's Souls is a Beautiful, Terrible Prototype

I used to HATE Demon's Souls. After pushing through the jank, the weird mechanics, and the absolute friction of the PS5 remake to get the platinum trophy, I swore I was done with it. But, after playing the rest of FromSoftware's catalog, I decided that I had to come back. This video essay is a deep dive into the weirdest game in the Soulsborne series, where we'll look at how Demon's Souls acts as a beautiful, terrible prototype for everything that came after it. From the completely unfair hitboxes of the Vanguard Demon to the pure structural jank of the Maneater fight, this is a breakdown of how FromSoft experimented with early boss design, why the levels hate you, and why I finally realized that all this friction is actually what makes the game brilliant.
