Celynho Show, samba dancer and the last of Rio de Janeiro's "malandro" (streetwise character), sat down at Armazém Senado, ordered his cold beer, and opened up. He has over 40 years of experience in the Sapucaí (Sambadrome), more than 46 wearing a white suit, hat, and pointed shoes, and a lifetime dedicated to the "malandro" samba style, which, according to him, can't be taught anywhere. You're either born with it in your blood or you don't have it. In this almost hour-long conversation, Celynho recounted his relationship with Seu Zé Pilintra, the spiritual malandro who, according to people on the street, manifests in him when he crosses Lapa at dawn. Women cry and hug him saying "Seu Zé is everything in my life," requests for blessings, spontaneous consultations during performances. And the philosophy he carries above all: "I don't ask for anything, I only give thanks, because Seu Zé knows who is deserving." Celynho also opened up about the behind-the-scenes of Beija-Flor, recounting how Laíla knocked on his dressing room door at the Teatro Rival and insisted until he convinced him to accept the only coordination position he ever accepted. He gave a lesson on how to behave inside a samba school's rehearsal space, talked about his journey through Salgueiro, Imperatriz, Mangueira, and Viradouro's championship run in 1997 with Joãozinho Trinta, and how he took Rio's samba to Paris, London, Italy, and Portugal.
