The storming of the Tsar's Winter Palace in St. Petersburg on November 7, 1917 (October 26, Old Testament) was the dramatic climax of the Russian Revolution. Its origins reach back to the 19th century, and its impact extends to the present day. The Soviet Union, which emerged from the revolution and the civil war, decisively influenced the course of world history, not only during the "Great Patriotic War" against Hitler's armies. The year 1917 also marked the starting point of the largest revolutionary uprising in modern history. The Russian and Soviet 20th century was a kind of continuous revolution, characterized by extreme violence and terror, but also by profound changes and the hope for liberation from hardship and oppression. One hundred years after its beginning, the internationally renowned historian of Russia and the Soviet Union, Manfred Hildermeier, will speak about its history. A collaboration with the Heinrich Böll Foundation Saar - Speaker: Prof. Dr. Manfred Hildermeier (retired), born in 1948, is Professor of East European History at the University of Göttingen. His research focuses on Russian history from the 17th to the 20th centuries and the history of the Soviet Union. In addition to numerous articles, he has authored two standard works on this subject: "History of the Soviet Union 1917–1991: Rise and Fall of the First Socialist State" (1998) and "History of Russia: From the Middle Ages to the October Revolution" (2016). He has undertaken numerous research stays both in Germany and abroad (Harvard, Oxford, among others) and is a member of various commissions and institutes. Hildermeier was also co-editor of several academic journals and served as chairman of the German Association of Historians from 2000 to 2004.
