Many people who want to start trail running or running home struggle with choosing a running backpack. According to Tomonaga, the two key criteria for choosing a running backpack are "capacity" and "usability." First, "capacity" should hold around 10 liters of essential gear, making it easy to use for both trail runs and home runs. Tomonaga recommends the PAAGOWORKS "RUSH 12" and the Salomon "ACTIVE SKIN 8." The ACTIVE SKIN 8 (men's) has a two-tiered front pocket that can hold a flask in the upper section, while the RUSH 12 has a lower section designed to fit a water bottle. The pockets vary depending on the type of bottle. The ACTIVE SKIN 8 is sold in separate models for men and women, each designed to fit a different body type. The RUSH 12 is a unisex model, but the sizing can be adjusted at the sides. One size fits all. In any case, "fit is the most important thing, so I recommend trying it on," says Tomonaga. Be sure to try it on at your local outdoor shop or sports retailer. As for what to pack in a 10L backpack, you might be wondering: rainwear, snacks, a light, a smartphone, a first aid kit, and a change of clothes. Even with everything packed, there's still room, so adding thicker layers is a good idea depending on the weather.
