Did not expect this! Prohibition signs! Solo and alone at Karon beach New Years Eve 2026

Thailand’s Karon beach was very different for New Years Eve celebrations to welcome the year 2026. Different from past years. This year no public concert, no food stalls, no light displays, no public fireworks, and the sale of lanterns and fireworks is prohibited. Thailand is in mourning the Queens mother, Sirikit, who passed away in October 2025. One year of mourning, and particualary the first 90 days period sees events being cancelled or modified and reduced. Loud behavior is discouraged. I travelled from Melbourne to Phuket to celebrate the new year, solo and alone.
