The Legal Amazon region is home to approximately 1,300 clandestine airstrips, unregistered with the National Civil Aviation Agency. This is more than the total number of legally registered airstrips in the region. These clandestine airstrips lack air traffic control and control over the cargo loaded onto aircraft. Criminal activities, such as illegal logging, drug trafficking, and especially gold mining, take advantage of this. The far-right government of Jair Bolsonaro supports illegal mining, even when it encroaches on indigenous lands and protected areas. This has resulted in a new gold rush, with the increased value of one of the key components of a mining operation: the pilot. This documentary is part of the report "THE RUNSWAYS OF DESTRUCTION," produced in partnership with the Pulitzer Center and The New York Times, which identified 362 clandestine airstrips near areas devastated by illegal mining in the Amazon.
