Like many other districts in this area, it was once under the jurisdiction of Kent. Plumstead is almost entirely a suburb of the industrial town of Woolwich. For centuries, it had a population of approximately 1000 people who made their living from fishing and agriculture despite the fact that the name Plumstead means "the place where the plums grow". In later years, housing development and the population of Plumstead began to increase exponentially. The residents were mostly workers helping to develop the expanding Royal Arsenal area of Woolwich and the Siemens industrial development in Charlton. In 1876, they tried to build even more housing across Plumstead Common but it was met with strong resistance and the plans flopped. Two years later, Plumstead Common was given its own Act of law to protect it as public open space forever. Plumstead has a mainline train station but it's much better served by buses since it's home to over a dozen routes via its large bus garage which was built and has been operational since 1981. In 2015, Plumstead was named as the cheapest rental district in London according to a survey conducted by Rightmove. This make it 7 times cheaper then renting a place in Mayfair, which is the most expensive London district. Almost every school in Plumstead has a rating of 'Good' by Ofsted. The annual Plumstead Make Merry festival is the longest-running annual community festival in the Borough since 1975 with music, arts and activities. Its funded and run voluntarily by the locals and celebrates the areas history and diverse demographic.
