These aren't accidents. In this video, as a real urban planner, I'm explaining the disastrous planning decisions behind U.S worst designed cities. From highways that demolished historic neighborhoods to sprawling deserts of asphalt, these are the cautionary tales of car centric planning gone wrong. #urbanplanning #us #explained Atlanta: The city of "urban punishment," where 14 lane highways create pure gridlock and historic neighborhoods were bulldozed for parking lots. Dallas: A city that dedicated 40% of its downtown to surface parking and built 20 level highway interchanges instead of public transit. Las Vegas: The desert sprawl that consumes 3x the national average of water while building suburbs 40 miles into the heat. Los Angeles: The city that destroyed the world's largest streetcar network to build freeways that don't work, leaving residents trapped in traffic. Miami: The city drowning in rising sea levels while approving 50,000 new units in flood zones and building roads that trap cars in seawater. Orlando: A tourist trap built for cars, not people, with 12 mile strips of traffic and a commuter rail that doesn't run when tourists visit. Tampa: The city that demolished its streetcars for highways, creating a two-tiered toll road system that separates the rich from the traffic. Detroit: The Motor City that demolished more of itself for cars than WWII did to Germany, bankrupting itself with suburban sprawl.
