I show all the steps to refine karat gold scrap jewelry into 999 pure gold using nitric acid and aqua regia. First, the gold is inquarted with sterling silver to reduce the gold content in the alloy below 25% so that when dissolved, the nitric acid can fully penetrate and remove the unwanted base metals. Next, the gold is then further refined in aqua regia to produce 999 fine gold. The two acids which are used in this process are hydrochloric and nitric acid. Nitric acid is very corrosive and when combined with hydrochloric acid, creating aqua regia, it becomes an even stronger acid capable of dissolving gold. Process should be performed outdoors or under a vent hood. If you're using a nitric acid substitute, it should still be outdoors, or within a self-contained system that neutralizes fumes.
