The intuitive space provided when material is translated from one medium into a different medium is of paramount importance for Los Angeles-based visual and sound artist Steve Roden (born 1964). He translates various types of notation, be they words, music, compositions, spaces, photographs or maps into scores which form the basis of his paintings, drawings, sculptures, films/videos, sound installations, and performances. Primarily known for his sound work, Roden s abstract sound pieces based on objects, spaces or field recordings, possible landscapes as he calls them, are integral to the lowercase sound movement in experimental electronic music. Steve Roden's solo shows include Geluidpost at Lokaal 01, Breda, Netherlands; and projects with Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects; Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, New York; Studio La Citta Gallery, Verona, Italy; and Walter and McBean Galleries at San Francisco Art Institute. He has exhibited in group exhibitions across the world at spaces such as Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Sculpture Center, New York; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia; Drawing Room, London; and the Mercosur Biennial, Porto Alegre, Brazil.
