The modern Abarth was introduced in Japan in 2009 (Abarth 500), but launched in Europe in 2007. Therefore, even though it looks the same, it has been 15 years, but it doesn't look old. 15 years for one model would normally be considered two generations, but the character of the base model, the Fiat 500, and the good qualities of the car make it still attractive. The stock of used cars in Japan is roughly 13 years old. The current model on sale is already Series 6. The market price turning point is the 2017 MC model (upgraded mainly with the front mask). If you have a pre-MC model, can you enjoy it with a total budget of less than 2 million yen including pre-maintenance? That's how it is. If you feel like it, you can buy a new 595, but let's start by looking at the basic specifications. The engine itself has not changed since its debut, and is equipped with a 1.4L inline 4-cylinder turbo engine. The basic 595 has a maximum output of 145ps in the catalog model. The recently added sports F595 and the 595 Turismo with GT-like equipment have a maximum output of 165ps. And the top-grade Competizione has a maximum output of 180ps. The normal Fiat 500 has a maximum output of 85ps for the high-output model. The output difference is 65 to 95ps, which shows how athletic the 595 is. And it is the dimensions that determine the character of this car. The body size is 3660mm long, 1625mm wide, 1505mm high, and the wheelbase is 2300mm. For comparison, the BMW Mini (3-door) has a body size of 3880mm long, 1725mm wide, 1430mm high, and a wheelbase of 1495mm. While thinking that the Mini has gotten bigger, my imagination is growing that the 595 will win when it comes to the "go-kart feel". In addition, the 595 can be chosen with a combination of a dandy left-hand drive and a 5-speed manual transmission (not possible with BMW Minis, even if you look back at previous used cars). The Turismo is only available with a 5-speed automatic (Dualogic) with manual mode, but the condition varies depending on the usage environment and the owner's treatment, so it is a good idea to visit a specialty store only for used cars that are out of warranty. If it is a high-year model that was registered within the first three years, there will probably be no major problems even if it is sold from one place to another, but if it is an item that is out of the manufacturer's warranty period, it is safer to go to a specialty store that can perform maintenance. That's why I visited Abarth specialty store "Autospec" in Gotemba City, Shizuoka Prefecture this time. Founded with a focus on Italian and French cars, it is now in its 21st year as an Abarth specialty store (main store). On the day of the interview, there were more than 10 595s in stock, and new cars with specifications from the US were also lined up. When we asked the store manager Suzuki how to choose, he said, "If you haven't decided on the model you want, we ask you how you use the car and check the grade differences and steering position." It is important to touch the car directly and it helps to develop your eye. The store handles a lot of "Competizione MT cars", and they say that they have been able to maintain their current stock by opening a specialized purchase base in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. The adjacent pit also has an alignment tester, which is very reassuring. Now, as for the important 595, as you would expect, the Competizione is the top model in the catalog, and it produces a wild exhaust note. The standard Record Monza muffler (optional for other grades) is equipped with a simple spring-based exhaust valve system, and it pops up the moment you take your foot off the gas, making you feel great. The standard 595 has a pretty good sound, but Abarth has a history of developing and selling high-performance mufflers for commercial vehicles while also racing, so they are extremely particular about their exhaust systems.
