Pearl Millet | Intro and Uses in Benin, West Africa | Pearl Millet Benefits | Back to Basics | 006
The word Millet represents a diverse group of cereal plants from a grass family known as Poaceae. The two most known millets are pearl millet and finger millet. When used in West Africa, the term refers to the pearl millet species. I created this episode to give a brief introduction on pearl millet, and some of the millet dishes in Benin. Pearl millet is indigenous to West Africa where it was first domesticated. Pearl millet is an important cereal crop in Benin, especially in the northern regions, and ranks fourth after maize, rice, and sorghum. In terms of health benefits, pearl millets are gluten free and easy to digest. They contain a rich amount of iron, which helps with anemia. Pearl millet is an important source of energy and provides the necessary nutrients recommended for the health and well-being of babies, nursing mothers, and people with diabetes. It is highly effective in cases of constipation and stomach ulcers. It also helps in lowering cholesterol levels. I hope you SUBSCRIBE and JOIN ME on my journey of exploring West African food.
