Tragedy strikes Uncle Barret. His shack, for which he has worked the land his entire life, just as his father and grandfather did, is slipping through his fingers. Now, in his old age, he doesn't earn as much from farming as he did in his youth and can't meet his debts. Don Salvador, the shack owner, urges him to pay his debts. When he can't, he takes him to court to be evicted. Uncle Barret, Amparo, his wife, and their four daughters are put on the street. Neighbors take them in, as that's the only way to help. Uncle Barret, seething with rage, refuses to accept the loss of everything. He'll go to jail, but the damned old usurer won't be able to enjoy his shack.
