Since the 1960s, in the Bamingui-Bangoran prefecture in northern Central African Republic, more than 80% of animal species have disappeared. Elephants, giraffes, and other felines are victims of intensive poaching, fueled by the porous borders with Chad and Sudan and the numerous infiltrations of rebel groups. In the northeast of the country, an uncontrollable zone, a few organizations are trying to address this veritable environmental disaster in nature reserves. An American organization has signed a 25-year partnership with the government. A challenge its 150 underarmed men are struggling to meet. In 10 years, these eco-guards have nevertheless managed to retake and control a quarter of the protected area, and some animals are gradually returning.
