For a long time, I lived thinking that Izu referred to West Izu, but in high school, I heard rumors of the fashionable towns of East Izu. As an adult, I bought a motorcycle and visited the area, only to discover a town that was clearly commercialized for tourism. I was shocked to learn that what tourists meant by "Izu" was actually East Izu. My curiosity about this unfamiliar side of my hometown piqued, and as I explored, I realized that there were actually connections throughout the town to the Izu villages I knew. Looking back, this was a rediscovery of my hometown.
