DELTARUNE - Kaizo Roaring Knight - No-Hit (Normal + Weird Route)
Was curious at what mods Deltarune has nowadays and came across this one. Very cool one that dramatically increases the difficulty of the Roaring Knight, easily the best boss in the main game. The name of the mod is kinda cringe but it's probably the best I've seen, a lot of thought went into the design to make it feel like a natural evolution of the fight. Besides remixing old attacks it also adds new ones and even restores some of the unused ones. It also comes with a really sick practice mode, which I appreciate. The fight gets harder the longer it goes on, so you really want to do as much damage as possible to speedkill it. The mod plays into this by making the Knight block your attack if you don't get a crit, which is pretty evil. I also like how you're incentivized to graze as much as possible to keep your attack up, really making use of all this game's mechanics. The fight is different on the Weird Route, patterns are adjusted or completely changed, with some being easier but mostly harder overall. Also harder simply for the fact that you get less good equipment on the Weird Route. Took about 15 hours, then another 4 hours for B-Side after. Most attacks are not too bad but some can have really nasty RNG, some of the B-Side patterns are really pushing it too. Like Sword Tunnel 1 does feel really overtuned but it does get more consistent with practice. Star Storm 2/3, Box Splitter and Diamond Storm are all really hard too. The Multislash attacks were hard until I realized the bullets after the lasers were static. The final attack is also static, the hard part is the execution. The second attack I find easier without the speed boost from 'hold breath'. A mistake from 10 years ago who's consequences we're still forced to deal with today because Toby Fox was bad at Game Maker. It causes a ton of input lag and the lack of smooth motion also makes it really hard to read the bullets. There's only so far you can push the mechanical chunkiness of this battle system before it really falls apart. This mod is really fun but I could really do without the jank. The main game received a fan patch that painstakingly changed several-thousand individual pieces of timing-sensitive code to make game run at a native 60fps and the difference really is night and day, Deltarune is finally a good videogame. Would really wish that in the future mods would use this patch as a base to create new things on. There is only so much you can do with 30fps. Also really frustrating that the best boss in the game happens to be in the one chapter where your hitbox is fucked up. For some reason in chapter 3 your hitbox is like a big square instead of the normal heart-shape, so you can get hit by literally nothing it's messed up.
