Mercedes Benz E220d Coupé (2018) Review – Ultimate Coupé Seduction

Let's face it, Mercedes-Benz is no stranger when it comes to producing sleek, elegant and beautiful sporting coupés. Well, now there is one which offers S-Class levels of design, build and technology and does all of this at a more affordable price point, meet the new E-Coupé, one of the nicest looking Coupe's which I have ever driven. The E-Coupe name was first re-instated back in 2009 (C207). Combining an elegant design with the grandeur of a sporting coupé. So now with the new E-Class sedan (W213), it seems fitting that this latest generation is more advanced, and better looking than ever before. There are several engine variants available within South Africa, these include the E200 Coupé 135 kW and 300 Nm of torque from its 2.0-litre turbopetrol motor to the one which we spent time with, the E220d with its 2.0-litre turbodiesel motor which produces 143 kW and 400 Nm of torque and then two more power petrol variants, namely the E300 and E400 4MATIC Coupé. At first, I was afraid of the idea that a beautiful and sensual coupé could bare a small turbodiesel motor. My fears, however, were washed away by the level of overall refinement, and incredibly impressive fuel economy figures as offered by the E220d. The interior design closely mimics that of the new E-Class and even bigger more expensive S-Class. Immense levels of technology further highlighted by the optional Widescreen Cockpit, and configurable digital display as well as 64 shades of mood lighting within the interior space. Every imaginable media source is offered in the new E-Coupé, as is beautiful sound delivered by the optional Bermeister Audio system. To further improve the interior space is increased dimensions when compared to its predecessor and a stretched wheelbase which translates to more room for occupants throughout the cabin. The boot is also sizeable, offering 425-litres of space. This latest generation E-Coupé takes safety and driver autonomy to new heights with systems such as, Distance Pilot Distronic with Steering Pilot, which is a semi-autonomous feature that lets the driver adapt and maintain following distance at speeds of up to 210 kph. A feature known as Steering Pilot further keeps the car driving within its lane at speeds of up to 130 kph and in those frustrating traffic situations, hardly any input is required from the driver. The Mercedes-Benz E-Coupé represents what is, in my opinion, one of the nicest looking Mercedes-Benz vehicles ever to have been produced. Sublime levels of technology, an elegant silky smooth ride and S-Class levels of premium, make it truly amazing value and very impressive.
