California Quail Hunting: A Hard Lesson in the Desert

It’s not always about limits. Sometimes, it’s about what you leave behind. In this California quail hunt, I walk miles of high desert terrain with my bird dog Bruce—chasing wild coveys, missing shot after shot, and finally connecting with just one bird… only to lose it to the desert. What followed was an hour-long search, a rattlesnake encounter, and a moment every upland hunter dreads: leaving a wounded bird behind. This hunt wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t perfect. But it was real. And it reminded me why we do this—and what it costs when things go wrong. ▶️ Subscribe for more California quail hunts, dog work, and honest stories from the field. 📍 Filmed in Southern California’s high desert.
