Helm Crag, The Greenburn Round. Lake District. 24th Sept 2025

A circular walk in the Lake District taking in 4 Wainwright Fells, Helm Crag, Gibson Knott, Calf Crag & Steel Fell. The walk starts from the parking area beside the A591 just down from Dunmail Raise. We walk down the road past TownHead Cottages and turn right just before Ghyll Foot Farm. The path heads over Green Burn by crossing a wooden Footbridge. Once over the Footbridge the path starts to climb up the side of Helm Crag. The path starts off by heading straight up before Zig Zagging up towards Bracken Hause. We turn left at Bracken Hause to reach the summit of Helm Crag. From the summit we walk across the top of the fell to the rock formation know as "The Lion & The Lamb" We then retrace our steps down off Helm Crag to Bracken Hause, where we continue along the ridge to Gibson Knott. There are a number of raised outcrops of similar height on Gibson Knott, but the one with the cairn on a rocky platform seems to be the recognised summit by most people, and is the highest point marked on the map. From Gibson Knott, we follow the path along the ridge to the third summit of the day, Calf Crag. The path is a mixture of grass, bog and rocky sections. From Calf Crag we turn right ( North) to head to our final summit of the day, Steel Fell also know as Dead Pike. The path to Steel Fell is mainly grassy with some boggy sections. After enjoying the views from Steel Fell we then head down the ridge of Steel Fell to join back on to the outward path and follow the road back to the parking area. Distance is around 7 miles.
