How Hyperpop Became The Future Of Pop | What Is Hyperpop?
(Hyperpop | The Future of Pop?) Around a year ago today, my friend messaged me the link to an underground experimental band’s music video.. entitled “Money Machine” with the caption: “this is a bop”... But It wasn’t a bop. I was immediately met by the high pitched vocals, a harsh instrumental, and visual distortion. I felt a mix of intrigue and confusion but wasn’t necessarily enjoying the experience. I then suppressed the song into the back of my mind, until the video resurfaced onto my recommended page one fateful day. With a feeling of spontaneity I dragged my cursor onto the video, hoping for a better experience this time around. As soon as I clicked play my brain was instantly scratched in all the right places, hearing the heavy distortion, interesting vocals, and a one of a kind instrumental, I was hooked. Hyperpop is a musical demonstration of minimalism, featuring bubbly electronic synths, extreme pitching, distortion of vocals, pulsating base, crowded tracks, and a strong emphasis on femininity and cuteness. Like many genres it stems from several others, from bubblegum bass to EDM. But unlike many, Hyperpop focuses on parodying pop music. Taking popular music tropes and ideas turning them up to 100 making it a familiar, but still one of a kind sound. The genre casts a broad spectrum of characters, from prominent figures such as Charli XCX, Slayyyter, and 100 Gecs, to early foundational artists like A. G. Cook, Hannah Diamond, and SOPHIE, to new growing artists like Cmten, p4rkr, that kid, aldn, glaive, and Tony Velour to name a few.
