A revolution in 1815 ended Carlos Maria de Alvear’s role as Supreme Director and a General Congress was called in 1816 at Tucumán, with delegates from the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata, while the Federal League Provinces, including the Eastern Province of modern day Uruguay, chose not to. On 9 July 1816, it passed a Declaration of Independence. Avenida Nueve de Julio, the main thoroughfare of Buenos Aires, and with 18 lanes, the widest in the world, was named after this auspicious day.
