146 - Luciene Almeida | Os médicos querem amputar a perna dela.
Link to the crowdfunding campaign: https://www.vakinha.com.br/6163054 In this episode of Healthy Living in Debate, we welcome Luciene Oliveira de Almeida, a dance teacher, choreographer, and professional with over 35 years of experience. A graduate in Dance from the Paulista Faculty of Arts, Luciene has dedicated her life to movement, teaching, art, and transforming people through dance. In April 2021, Luciene was diagnosed with low-grade parosteal osteosarcoma in the proximal tibia of her right leg. The first sign was a sudden swelling near her knee. After tests such as magnetic resonance imaging, bone scintigraphy, CT scans, X-rays, and bone biopsy, the diagnosis was confirmed. In September 2021, she underwent surgery to remove the tumor. During the procedure, it was found that the tumor was externally attached to the tibia, without compromising the interior of the bone, allowing for a less invasive surgery. However, the postoperative period was difficult: Luciene developed erysipelas, required hospitalization, antibiotics, and specialized wound care for weeks until complete healing was achieved. Even after recovery, permanent sequelae remained, such as denervation of the calf, motor instability of the knee, frequent edema, recurring pain, and significant limitations in mobility and quality of life. After three years of follow-up, in November 2025, new news arrived: tests identified a rare recurrence of parosteal osteosarcoma, now with tumors in soft tissues in the calf and the posterior part of the right thigh. According to the medical evaluations reported by the patient, the conventional alternative presented was amputation of the affected limb, without a guarantee of cure. Faced with this scenario, Luciene and her family sought new possibilities. In 2026, they learned about irreversible electroporation, an interventional technique that uses electrical pulses to destroy tumor cells, with the aim of preserving important structures around the lesion, such as nerves, blood vessels, tendons, and muscles. In Luciene's case, this possibility was presented as an alternative to try to preserve the limb and maintain functionality. Medical literature describes parosteal osteosarcoma as a rare, usually low-grade subtype that originates on the surface of the bone. In low-grade and resectable tumors, surgery is usually the main treatment, and chemotherapy is not always indicated. (Radiopaedia) Irreversible electroporation is still an expanding approach for sarcomas and tumors near delicate structures. Scientific reviews indicate that the technique has potential in solid tumors that are difficult to resect or close to important structures, but it still requires individualized assessment and specialized follow-up. (PubMed) To carry out the treatment, Luciene started an online fundraising campaign with a goal of R$ 230,000.00, an amount intended for the medical team, hospital infrastructure, necessary technology, exams, hospitalizations, and the costs of the two planned interventions. This episode is about cancer, science, pain, hope, the limits of conventional medicine, and solidarity.
