It is located in the Pacajus microregion of the Fortaleza Metropolitan Region, 40.1 km from the state capital. According to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), Horizonte was the city in the state of Ceará with the fastest population growth between 2000 and 2010—65%.[5] BR-116 is the main access route to the municipality, which also has a ring road connecting the highway to BR-020 and BR-222. Horizonte is located near a strategic point for crossing the Atlantic Ocean and offers excellent access to North and Central America, being 43.9 km from Pinto Martins International Airport, 47.8 km from the Mucuripe Port Complex, and 89.9 km from the Port of Pecém.[6] The municipality, formerly a district of Pacajus, was known as Olho d'água. The city has a soccer club: Horizonte Futebol Clube, which plays its games at the Clenilsão and Domingão stadiums, both located in Horizonte and owned by the city government. One of the migratory attractions is the large industrial center present in the municipality, which gives Horizonte a mixed population, with people coming from various parts of Ceará in search of better employment and income. Because it is located in the metropolitan region, Horizonte serves as a reference point for those seeking the capital but unable to live there directly, so many of these people end up settling in Horizonte. Etymology The name of the municipality, Horizonte, was suggested by Professor Raimunda Duarte Teixeira through Decree-Law No. 1114 of December 30, 1943, and has the meaning "place that the eye cannot reach," giving the city a figurative dimension.[7] Its original name was Olho d'Água, referring to the numerous water sources in the region. Later, Olho D'água do Venâncio, as it was located on one of Venâncio Raimundo de Sousa's properties, was renamed Horizonte in 1988.[8] History The region along the banks of the Acarape and Mal Cozinhado rivers was inhabited by indigenous people such as the Jenipapo and Kanyndé.[9] The settlement emerged with the Jesuit mission and the expansion of livestock farming. The first inhabitants of the region were the Paiacus Indians, a group who lived off hunting, fishing, and farming on the lands of that region. In the early 17th century, the Indians were settled by Jesuits, and the territory was named Monte-mor-o-Velho and, later, Monte-mor-o-Novo, the current city of Pacajus. The locality, which later became a village and, later, the municipality known as Guarani, was dissolved in 1920, becoming a district of Aquiraz. In 1938, Guarani, which soon after was renamed Pacajus, returned to the status of a municipality, with its territory divided into four districts: Guarani, Currais Velho, Lagoa das Pedras, and Olho d'Água do Venâncio. The last would later become Horizonte, receiving this name due to the region's rich water sources, the spring on Venâncio's farm being the best known.
