Old Town Bandon Oregon: A Slow Day by the Sea
Sometimes the most beautiful way to experience the Oregon coast is to simply not have a plan and watch the day drift by. You are in for a special slow-TV treat as we experience a laid-back Friday afternoon in the heart of historic Old Town Bandon, Oregon. This video is a collection of peaceful visual snapshots capturing the gentle rhythm of a quiet spring day by the Coquille River harbor, set to a slow-paced bluesy track. This was a relaxed, lazy day spending time by the sea before heading home over the next couple of days. I kept my camera ready, but only pulled it out when I felt the moment spoke to me. This day, my friends, was about as unplanned as it gets. You should know that although these coastal streets bustle with tourists in the summer, spring belongs to the locals. On a breezy sunny day like this one, the whole town seems to smile, and strolling up and down the sidewalks, in and out of shops and down along the pier I just felt… happy. That guy on the e-bike looped around town multiple times with a speaker playing his favorite tunes.. everything from John Denver to classic rock. He was definitely having his best day.🚴♂️ Now, you know I have a story to tell… Long before Irish immigrant George Bennett arrived in 1873 and named the town after his birthplace of Bandon in Ireland, this waterfront was a thriving trading hub. The community has always been defined by resilience; when a catastrophic forest fire completely destroyed the commercial district in 1936, the locals refused to abandon the coast, rebuilding their town right along the boardwalk where the river meets the sea. Wandering past the weathered storefronts and picturesque pier, the town's creative spirit comes alive through unique public art, such as the hand-carved sculpture by local sculptor Chris Scamehorn. This striking wooden fish monument honors the legacy of legendary Bandon charter boat captain Ken Butler. Installed at the boardwalk marina in 2022, Scamehorn’s detailed craftsmanship offers a quiet, artistic nod to a beloved community figure whose life was entirely shaped by the Pacific Ocean, and shared lovingly with thousands over his lifetime there. And let’s not forget the intricately carved whimsical wire-haired mermaid statue featured in the thumbnail. This striking mermaid sculpture certainly stops you in your tracks! She is a beautiful contradiction—where cold, industrial materials meet the living soul of the Pacific Northwest. Sculpted from a salvaged mannequin and industrial materials, her serene expression contrasts with a wild, untamed crown of flowing wire hair, shaped as if frozen in a deep-sea current or whipped by the ocean wind. Born as a unique garden creation by a local coastal artist, this captivating figure eventually sparked a global viral phenomenon. Ah, but in this moment, she was merely a silent mesmerizing muse, standing watch over the empty streets. Come wander along with me as I observe the daily rhythm unfold—local crabbers pulling their pots at the wooden pier, old friends chatting on a bench in the shade, bobbing boats and hand made wind chimes tinkling in the ever present Bandon breeze. And a quick stop at the famed Face Rock Creamery to close out the day. Best aged white cheddar ever, by the way. That last ambient shot of the alley by the bar was just something I wanted to include as a testament to the personality of the town, and that there is always a story behind the vibe. Hope you like it. Oh I am a bit wordy today, aren’t I? Well, thanks for coming along! Ok everyone, It’s time to sit back, and let the slow soulful tunes take you on a peaceful afternoon escape through one of the Oregon Coast’s most charming historic ports. It was just what we needed.. maybe you need that too. Enjoy this beautiful lazy day… I bet y’all wan’t fish-n-chips & chowder now…dontcha!🐟 Lol. I’ll catch ya next time!💚 #BandonOregon #slowtv #oregoncoast P.S. I will share an update soon about where we are headed in about a week! More PNW adventures to come, so stay tuned!😃
