9th Buddhist Summit in Japan 2026 -

English Translation In 1998, with the participation of thirteen countries, the first summit was held in Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan. It was attended by the Maha Sangha representing the three major Buddhist traditions: Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana. Today, we recognize this as the beginning of a truly historic journey, as the summit now includes representatives from fifty-two nations. While typically one representative attends per country, additional participants are occasionally permitted with the approval of the Buddhist Summit Headquarters in Japan. The first summit commenced at the Nenbutsushu Torimoto Temple, under the patronage of the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, the King of Thailand, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It was founded and organized by the Most Venerable Dr. Kyuse Enshinjoh, the founder of the World Buddhist Summit (International Buddhist Association). The primary objective of this organization was to address the arbitrary actions of those who call themselves Buddhists but deviate from the core teachings. Furthermore, it aimed to promote world peace by demonstrating the Buddha's teachings of compassion, loving-kindness, and mercy, urging world leaders to act upon these principles and collaborate with heads of all religions. From its inception, the summit declared its commitment to creating an environment where all beings can live in peace, showing compassion to all living creatures, and highlighting the profound value of human life through Buddhist awareness. In 2023, the global community’s attention was drawn to this organization when the current president, Most Venerable Dr. Kori Shinkai, was invited to address the United Nations. Following this speech, peace-loving religious leaders worldwide began to engage more actively with the organization. Many were astonished and inspired by the essence of the Dhammapada verses shared during these dialogues: "All tremble at violence; all fear death. Putting oneself in another's place, one should not kill nor cause another to kill." "Hatred is never appeased by hatred in this world. By non-hatred alone is hatred appeased. This is a law eternal."
