By chanting (offering) sutras, one can show respect to the "Principal Image" and "Kobo Daishi Kukai." Since sutras are often heard at funerals and memorial services, many people think of them as chanting to honor the deceased. While sutras have that aspect, they also have another important role. Buddha attained enlightenment by facing suffering head-on and preached his teachings to guide the living to happiness. For this reason, the sutras that record the Buddha's teachings are originally read to the living. Because Buddha preached using different stories depending on the audience, some sutras are said to have opposing characteristics. As a result, some sects do not recite (or do not need to recite) certain sutras.
