Oczy i uszy firmy. Dział innowacji w banku - startupy, technologie, zmiana w dużej organizacji
A large bank doesn't change like a startup. But if it wants to move forward, it must be able to look at the market, understand technology, collaborate with startups, and constantly teach the organization new ways of operating. In this episode of Salto Talks, I speak with Paulina Skrzypińska, Chief Innovation Officer at BNP Paribas Bank Polska and co-founder of Endeavor Poland. We discuss what the work of an innovation team in a large, regulated organization is really like. Not from the perspective of slogans and "innovation theater," but from the inside: from market scanning, through working with startups, team education, regulations, data security, to actual technology implementations. This is a conversation about a bank that wants to move forward, but must do so responsibly. It's about startups that want to work with large organizations but often don't yet understand the costs of such collaboration. And about the innovation department, which itself must operate a bit like a startup: constantly evolving, pivoting, listening to the market, and seeking what can truly benefit customers, the business, and the organization. In this episode, we discuss, among other things, About: How an innovation team works at a large bank Why banking is both innovative and very demanding How to connect the worlds of startups, technology, regulation, and business Why not every startup should start its sales with a bank What the real cost of collaborating with a large organization is How banks today view AI, data, the cloud, and security How to distinguish real innovation from innovation theater Why sometimes the innovation team has to pivot on its own How Endeavor supports founders who build companies with global ambitions 00:00 The most powerful quotes from the conversation — episode preview 01:44 Introduction and guest introduction 02:34 Paulina's radio past 03:13 Banking, innovation, and trust as an invisible currency 03:59 Two faces: a banker and a startuper 05:14 The role of a translator between the startup world and a bank 06:35 Regulations that change year to year 07:50 DORA, EBA, AI Act — the real cost of working with a bank 10:09 Is a bank a good first client for a startup? 10:57 Fintech and Poland's place on the digital map 11:31 BLIK, wallet, and the forgotten payment card 12:35 The innovation department as the eyes and ears of the organization 16:20 The history of Autenti and the digital signature 18:21 Where did BLIK come from? 18:56 Signing the contract with Autenti just before the pandemic 19:15 A pivotal moment for the entire industry 19:56 How the pandemic challenged the market 20:40 Customer experience and customer expectations 22:29 Geopolitics and daily market monitoring 24:32 AI as a buzzword in banking 25:46 Workshops with startups and the democratization of technology 29:25 Will AI replace humans? 30:44 Why I Don't Want to Talk to Sellers 30:58 Code of Cooperation with Startups 32:00 "We Have No Competition" - A Red Flag in a Conversation 34:17 Legacy of a Large Organization and the Cost of Cooperation 34:50 AI Act, EBA, DORA, and the Cloud in Practice 35:28 On-Prem as a Hard Limitation of the Regulated Sector 36:42 Team KPIs and Real Priorities 41:24 How to Avoid Innovation Theater 42:31 Code of Cooperation: 2018 vs. 2026 44:25 There's No Need to Reinvent the Wheel 46:12 Why the Word "Innovation" Bothers Paulina 50:28 Agility Instead of Innovation 56:53 Venture Debt and Capital Without Giving Up Shares 59:12 Endeavor Poland and a Network of Contacts in Almost 50 Countries 1:00:57 A+ Round and Investment Challenges in Poland 1:03:24 Limited "Shelf" Founders in Poland 1:04:13 Who would Paulina like to hear on Salto Talks?
