This is the first mystery of Shat Gombuj Mosque revealed || Shat Gombuj Mosque In Bagerhat || Shat Gombuj Mosque Built in the 15th century, the historic Shat Gombuj Mosque in Bagerhat is the largest and one of the oldest mosques in Sultanate Bengal. It was built by Khan-i-Jahan Ali. In 1985, [UNESCO] declared this structure a World Heritage Site. Construction and Background: Founder: Sufi saint and the then ruler of the Sundarbans, Ulugh Khan Jahan Ali. Period: Construction was completed between 1442 and 1459. Purpose: Not only a place of prayer, but it was also used as the central meeting place and madrasa of the ancient city called 'Khalifatabad' founded by Khan Jahan Ali. Naming and Architectural Style: Although the name is 'Shat Gombuj', in reality it has a total of 81 domes including the roof and minarets. Of these, 77 domes are on the roof and 4 domes are on the four corner minarets. It is believed that the Arabic or Persian word 'Amud' (which means Meaning pillar or pillar) has been transformed into 'Gombuj' in Bengali over time.
