Walls of Death: Illegal Driftnetting in the Mediterranean | EJF Documentary

Among the most destructive fishing methods ever used, driftnets have been banned in the Mediterranean for decades - but EJF's latest investigation reveals they never really went away and demand from the EU, the biggest buyer of Moroccan swordfish, is driving their continued use. The Alboran Sea sits at the crossroads of the Mediterranean and Atlantic: a narrow corridor teeming with marine life, and the site of a quiet, ongoing crime. EJF investigators travelled to the region to find out how and why driftnet fishing persists here. The nets stretch for tens of kilometres, drifting silently in the water column. Their target is swordfish, but dolphins, sharks, and sea turtles are their victims; bycatch with no commercial value, killed and dumped back into the sea. Abandoned nets drift on as ‘ghost gear’, carried by the currents, killing long after they’ve been forgotten.
