Prof Michael Chege,Remembering Makhan Singh Kenyan Patriot – His Thought and Action
In this presentation Prof. Chege will explore the intellectual contributions and political Vision of Makhan Singh, a pivotal yet under-recognized figure in Kenya’s anti –colonial struggle. Despite his significant role in shaping the country’s labour and independence movements, his legacy remains largely absent from public commemoration, with no major institutions or land marks bearing his name. This neglect is, in part, attributable to a reductive portrayal of Singh as merely a communist often without a nuanced examination of the nature and intent of his ideological commitments. The lecture seeks to critically engage with his thought, inviting a reconsideration of his place in Kenya’s political history. The discussants of the session were Mercy Nabwire and Wambui Wamai Jacqueline.
