Frederick Ashton’s Méditation from Thaïs is set to the flowing melodies of the Méditation religieuse from Jules Massenet’s opera Thaïs (1894). Ashton complements the ethereal and romantic mood of the music with a lyrical love duet. Anthony Dowell, former director of The Royal Ballet, designed the costumes and also appeared in the work’s first performance at the Adelphi Theatre in 1971, alongside Antoinette Sibley.
