A flood of air freight parcels, electronic devices that don't meet EU standards, and almost ineffective sunscreen – criticism of the Chinese shopping platform Temu continues unabated. The Business Temu fulfills desires that were previously denied by their own wallets. It's no wonder consumers are buying generously, as the goods are often many times cheaper than on conventional online platforms. "Kassensturz" shows the consequences of this desire to buy: Postal workers are groaning under the increasing flood of parcels. And customs officers are arriving at the border because they know they can't do more than conduct random checks. Authorities suspect that up to 65% of all parcels imported into the EU are under-declared. Specifically, this means: The government is missing out on substantial customs revenue. Product Damage The VDE, the German Association of Electrical Engineers, isn't just a laboratory. It's the authority par excellence for electrical safety in Germany. The SWR program "Marktcheck" therefore sent twelve devices purchased from Temu to the VDE laboratory. At a bargain price: All were extremely affordable. What the experts discovered there made more than just their hair stand on end: Only one product was okay, the remaining eleven were "conspicuous" and did not meet EU standards. The Test High SPF, low price? No problem for Temu. Sunscreens with SPFs 50+, 60+, or even 100 are available in abundance on the online platform. But do these high SPFs stand up to scientific testing? "Kassensturz" had seven sunscreens, all purchased from Temu, tested in the laboratory.
