This magnificent fortress has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, royal coronations, battles, and the flourishing of art and learning. The history of Bidar Fort dates back over 500 years. Although an earlier fort existed here, the present structure was rebuilt in the 15th century by Sultan Ahmad Shah Wali of the Bahmani Sultanate after he shifted his capital from Gulbarga to Bidar in 1427. Under his rule, Bidar became one of the most important cultural and political centers of the Deccan. As we approach the fort, its massive red laterite stone walls immediately capture our attention. The fort was strategically built on the edge of a plateau and protected by strong fortifications, steep natural cliffs, and a remarkable triple-layered moat system designed to keep enemies away. These defensive features made Bidar Fort one of the strongest forts in medieval India. Spread across a vast area, the fort is surrounded by towering walls and contains numerous palaces, mosques, gateways, gardens, pavilions, and royal structures. The architectural style reflects a beautiful blend of Persian, Turkish, and Indian influences, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Bahmani rulers. One of the highlights inside the fort is the famous Rangin Mahal, often called the "Palace of Colors." The fort contains 37 massive bastions, many of which once housed powerful cannons. The carefully planned defensive system, along with the fort's elevated position, made it nearly impossible for enemies to capture. As we walk through these ancient corridors and gateways, it's easy to imagine the bustling royal court, soldiers guarding the walls, scholars discussing philosophy, and artists creating masterpieces. Nearby stands the famous Mahmud Gawan Madrasa, a renowned educational institution that attracted scholars from across the Islamic world.
