Ypres The city of ‘Ypres’, known for its rich history and culture, is situated in the ‘Flemish Westhoek’, at 70 km from Bruges, south of the province of West Flanders. Ypres is also called ‘The Cat City’ and after the visit of Pope John Paul II, the ‘City of Peace’. Since Ypres was the 3rd city in Flanders during the 13th century (after Ghent and Bruges), it played a prominent role as a city in the County of Flanders. Ypers was surrounded on three sides by German troops, the entire time of the 4-year war. The Germans did not succeed to conquer the city. Nevertheless the city of ‘Ypres’ was fully destroyed. Daily the dead soldiers are commemorated during ‘The Last Post’ at 20.00h under the Menin Gate. Besides Ypres and the Flanders Fields Museum it is certainly worthwhile to visit the ‘Tyne Cot Cemetary’ in Passchendaele and the numerous graveyards.
