Jaundice is the yellowing of the skin caused by a buildup of bilirubin in the blood. Jaundice can occur if the liver cannot efficiently process red blood cells as they break down. It is normal in healthy newborns and usually clears up on its own. In older people, it can be a sign of infection or liver disease. Symptoms include yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes. Some newborns may need phototherapy for one or two days. In other cases, treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause.
