Schopenhauer Missed What Buddhists Knew About Wanting

Schopenhauer was the first Western philosopher to bow toward Buddhism. He saw that desire is the engine of suffering — and he found in Buddhist thought what he called confirmation. He was right about the convergence. He was wrong about the cure. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ EGO Buddhism Podcast — Buddhism × Western Philosophy ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ The convergence (genuine): Schopenhauer's Will ≈ Buddhist taṇhā. Structural suffering — the "pendulum swinging backwards and forwards between pain and ennui." Compassion (Mitleid / karuṇā) as the ethical center. Both diagnose desire as the engine of suffering. The blind spot: Schopenhauer could not distinguish two kinds of wanting. For him, ALL willing is Will — including the aspiration toward liberation. So his only exit was negation. Asceticism. Denial. The Will turning against itself. The Buddhist answer: The path uses a different kind of wanting to reach the end of wanting. Teachers in the Thai Forest tradition (Ajahn Jayasāro, P.A. Payutto) distinguish chanda — wholesome aspiration, desire-to-do — from taṇhā (craving). Ṭhānissaro Bhikkhu's framing: "skillful vs. unskillful desire." The landing question: "Is liberation the ending of desire — or the transformation of it?" Integrity notes: — This video takes no verdict. Neither system wins. The comparison is a dialogue. — chanda/taṇhā as a named binary is a Thai Forest tradition teaching (Ajahn Jayasāro, P.A. Payutto), labeled as such. It is not a canonical Nikāya formulation. — Schopenhauer quotations: Haldane/Kemp translation (1883–86) and Bullock (1903) — both public domain. The Payne 1958 translation is in copyright and is paraphrased, not quoted. — The claim that the Will ≈ taṇhā is a convergence, not an identity. "Schopenhauer's Will = Buddhist taṇhā" is an overclaim and is avoided. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ EGO is a Buddhism podcast exploring ancient wisdom through philosophy, science, and modern life. New episodes every two weeks.
