Psychedelic Chemistry Basics, Part 1: Phenethylamines with Paul Daley | The Shulgin Foundation

In Part 1 of our 3-part Psychedelic Chemistry Basics series, chemist Paul Daley offers a rich introduction to the history, structure, and significance of phenethylamines—the compound class at the heart of many of Alexander “Sasha” Shulgin’s most important contributions to psychedelic chemistry. Protégé of Sasha Shulgin and steward of the Shulgin lab, Paul begins with a broad historical overview before exploring the chemistry of phenethylamines, including their relationship to mescaline, their role in the history of psychedelic science, and how structural changes can influence activity, duration, and effects. The session also includes discussion of entactogens, receptor science, and a live audience Q&A. This recording is part of an ongoing 2026 educational series from The Shulgin Foundation. Part 2 will take place on May 27, 2026 and will focus on lysergamides. Register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/3-part-s... Part 3 will explore tryptamines later this year. Topics in this session include: The basics of phenethylamine chemistry Mescaline and the origins of psychedelic chemistry Alexander Shulgin’s contributions to the field Structure-activity relationships Entactogens and hallucinogenic phenethylamines Historical context for psychedelic research Audience Q&A with Paul Daley The Shulgin Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preserving the Shulgins’ legacy, supporting education, and rebuilding the Shulgin Farm for future generations.
