Oleandry - rośliny śródziemnomorskie. Jak uprawiać oleandry w Polsce?

We're starting a summer series of episodes about Mediterranean plants. 🌞 The first will be about the magnificently flowering oleanders. 🌸 How do they grow in warmer regions of Europe? And how can you grow them in Poland? Find the answers to these questions in today's video. Enjoy! 🌸🌸🌸 Oleanders are probably the most popular plants in the Mediterranean climate. In Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Croatia, they are found not only in gardens but also along roads and beaches. Therefore, they will be the focus of today's summer episode. Enjoy! Oleander is an undisputed symbol of Mediterranean flora, alongside palms and citrus trees. It evokes summer memories and brings a southern flair to our homes and gardens, as we increasingly grow it in pots in Poland as well. More on this later in the episode. Meanwhile, in warmer climates, it's a tree or shrub with an upright habit, often with multiple trunks. It can then be quite a large tree, roughly the size of our lilacs, not very tall, but still offering a moment of shade. It can also be shaped into a ball-shaped tree, which is additionally decorated with colorful flowers. Oleander espalierings or hedges are very common in Mediterranean countries. They can be tall and practically unshaped, or low, pruned to the desired height. Oleanders respond very well to pruning and in this case act as a green fence, so the flowering of these plants is not so important. This is a pity, because oleander flowers are beautiful. From the original white and pink-flowered forms, varieties have been developed that also bloom in other colors, such as purple, salmon, or yellow. Furthermore, these flowers can be single, double, or semi-double. They provide food for insects, in warmer countries, for example, for black bees, which inhabit dry habitats. Their females build solitary nests in the wood of dead trees. They can also be found in Poland. It's worth remembering that oleander is a poisonous plant. If you ever feel the urge to pick one of these inflorescences, be careful of the sap that oozes from the center. It can irritate the skin. It's best not to do so, although the sight of them can be tempting. In Mediterranean countries, these plants don't mind compacted, dry, clay soil or dry weather. Things are a bit different in our country, where they are forced to grow in limited amounts of soil in pots. So let's move to our gardens. We can grow these specimens, as well as larger and even more beautiful flowering ones, in our own country. However, we are forced to grow them in pots, as oleanders won't survive our winter outdoors. Therefore, during the coldest months, we must move them to a place where they will survive the frost and snow. Ideally, it should be a cool location, but where the temperature doesn't drop below freezing, and it should be bright. However, I've already had my oleanders survive even a slight frost, around -2 degrees Celsius. And they're still alive. This oleander has been with me for four years. During that time, it's been through a lot. And the fact that it's still standing here and looking beautiful is a testament to how resilient these plants are. It came to me as a truly small seedling. From the very beginning, it spent every summer in the garden. The first and second winters it spent indoors. During those winters, it lost its leaves and was even attacked by mealybugs, scale insects, and spider mites, but each time I put it out in the garden in May, it would come back to life and grow even larger. The third winter, it spent partly in the garage, where the temperature didn't drop below 10 degrees Celsius, and partly indoors, and it also survived until summer. Its last winter was in the greenhouse, where the temperature never dropped below 10 degrees Celsius. Unfortunately, in early spring, there was a small heating failure, and the night temperature dropped to -2 degrees Celsius. Oleanders survived, unlike bougainvillea and mandevilla. This means that even if we don't have ideal wintering conditions for Mediterranean plants, oleanders are suitable for growing in virtually any conditions. It's important to place them in the garden, on a balcony, or terrace for the summer. First, harden them off in the shade for a few days, acclimating them to outdoor conditions, before placing them in full sun, which they love most. Another wonderful feature of some oleanders is that their flowers smell wonderful. Take this dark pink specimen of mine, for example. Its scent is sweet and pleasant, somewhat reminiscent of anise candy. Since oleanders grow quickly, it's worth repotting them every season. And that's all for today.
