Antiphon God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:16) The Gloria is said. Collect Almighty and invisible God, who in the coming of Christ, the true light, have overcome the darkness of the world, turn toward us with serene gaze, that we may celebrate with unanimous praise the glorious birth of your only Son. He is God, and lives and reigns with you. First Reading He who loves his brother abides in the light. From the first letter of Saint John the Apostle 1 John 2:3-11 My little children, by this we know that we know Jesus, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says, "I know him," but does not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we know that we are in him. Whoever says he abides in him ought himself also to walk just as he walked. Beloved, I am not writing you a new commandment, but an old commandment that you received from the beginning. The old commandment is the word you heard. From the Gospel according to Luke Luke 2:22-35 When the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were completed, [Mary and Joseph] took him [Jesus] to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord—as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male shall be called holy to the Lord"—and to offer a sacrifice, according to what is said in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons." Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. Moved by the Spirit, he went to the temple. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what was customary in the law, he took him in his arms and blessed God, saying: "Lord, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel." Then Jesus' father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against—and a sword will pierce your own soul also—so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed." The word of the Lord. On the Offerings Receive, O Lord, our gifts in this mysterious encounter between our poverty and your greatness: we offer you what you have given us; you give us yourself in return. Through Christ our Lord. Communion Antiphon Through the tenderness and mercy of our God, a dawn from on high will visit us. (Cf. Luke 1:78) Or: Behold, this child is set as a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. (Luke 2:34-35) After Communion Almighty God, may the inexhaustible power of these holy mysteries sustain us at every moment of our lives. Through Christ our Lord.
