The New Lighthouse Job Came With 9 Rules—Rule 9 Was "Never Answer the Radio at Night

The Coast Guard doesn't man lighthouses anymore. They automated the last of the crewed ones in 1998, and after that the towers ran themselves. Coldwater Light did not need a keeper. It needed a caretaker. That was the word in the ad, and the word made the difference. This is the first-person account of a newly divorced man who accepted a six-month rotation on a bare granite islet a mile and a half off the coast of Maine, and who arrived to find the outgoing caretaker — a man named Beaumont on his fourth consecutive rotation — standing on the dock with his hands in his coat pockets, looking not at the boat but at the tower. Beaumont had asked, in writing, that the nine-rule handoff be done in person and not by manual. The story is what happened after the supply boat left the next morning. The tone here is cold, quiet, and heavy with the specific loneliness of the North Atlantic in March. The rules do not sound like ghost-story rules at first. They sound like operational discipline — when to sleep, when to run the generator, when to log a swell, when to sit down. It is only the ninth rule, about the radio at night, that makes the other eight sit differently in the mind. And once they sit differently, they cannot be unread. Nothing in this story is exaggerated. There is a Fresnel lens sitting behind an LED as an artifact. There is a satellite phone bolted to a plaster wall. There is a rotating lantern beam sweeping over black water and a spiral iron staircase worn soft by boots that are no longer on the islet. And there is a set of nine typed lines that a man named Beaumont wanted, very badly, to say out loud before he stepped onto that supply boat and left. For fans of maritime dread, remote-post horror, and long-form narrated rules-inheritance stories, this is a full-length piece meant to be listened to in one sitting, at night, with the door latched. Do not skip ahead to the ninth rule. The point of the story is the shape the other eight make around it. #creepypasta #lighthousehorror #maritimehorror #rulesbasedhorror #scarystories
